Contemporary craft for aesthetic connoisseurs
Handmade pieces crafted from natural fibres with a contemporary approach — this is the philosophy of ÁBBATTE. A constant tribute to artisanal work. It is, above all, a project of contemporary craftsmanship. Our team is engaged in a continual search for the beauty of what is authentic, weaving together in each piece history, science, botany and textile tradition. ÁBBATTE’s pieces are artisanally woven, slowly and with meticulous attention to detail, by a team of local weavers who create special objects for daily life. In the West, light has always been the greatest ally of beauty. In contrast, traditional Japanese...
Why here?
Why here? ÁBBATTE was born in a Cistercian abbey where tradition and modernity coexist in the revival of the ancient art of weaving. This location is the perfect fusion between what happened in the 13th century at the Monastery of Santa María de la Sierra, where monks were already weaving, and ÁBBATTE, a textile brand devoted to recovering the craft of weaving. The Cistercian order played a central role in religious history, placing special emphasis on manual labour. In addition to the social function it served until the French Revolution, the order exerted significant influence in intellectual and economic...
There’s no place like home
A home should be a place of peace, a space where we are in harmony with our individuality. That is why it must be personal, not a neutral, impersonal setting where anyone and no one could live at once. At ÁBBATTE, we pay special attention to lighting, scent, and fine textiles that reflect the uniqueness of the person who inhabits the space. A Sunday afternoon in a sunlit living room, a rug woven from natural fibres with a soft, welcoming texture that invites us to take off our shoes, a sofa full of handmade textile cushions where we can lie...
Handwoven cushions: textile objects as luxurious gifts
During the Arab rule in Spain, it was traditional to give luxurious textile objects as gifts. At ÁBBATTE, we’ve sought to revive this custom by introducing a collection of handwoven cushions in natural silk, with backings in velvet, linen, or silk. Each one is filled with wool from sheep raised in the Aragonese Pyrenees and has an inner cover made of natural cotton. The cushion is one of the most cherished elements in a home, used for naps, to get comfortable while reading, or simply to enjoy as a decorative piece. All of this contributes to making our homes a...
The queens of Castilla
The queens of Castilla, from Doña Urraca to Isabel the Catholic, wore sumptuous garments. They layered piece upon piece: camisias, sayas, briales, cloaks, and veils, all made with exquisite and delicate fabrics. Their sayas were crafted from fine silks, skillfully woven in the workshops of Al-Andalus. Their bielas were made from luminous fabrics adorned with oropel, a mysterious golden thread produced by the Andalusian textile industry. They also wore rich woollen cloaks, woven in Castilla by master craftsmen from the textile guilds that began to appear in nearly every city of the Crown of Castilla from the 13th century onward....
Let’s go on a picnic!
We enter a new season with a touch of melancholy as we leave summer behind, a time when we likely shared joyful moments with family and friends. But that doesn’t have to end. We can still enjoy special gatherings with them in unique, open-air settings. In this Vogue photo, a perfect countryside tea setting is recreated, featuring one of our hand-loomed cushions, made of cherry-colored linen with decorative diagonal stitching, a one-of-a-kind piece from our collection. At ÁBBATTE, we support and promote the revival of the local textile tradition of the Sierra de Guadarrama, helping to preserve the...
