Garden diaries. Spring
The word 'gift' is often associated with either giving or receiving. However, these actions don't need to occur for us to feel the joy that gifts bring. What's perhaps more important is the perception that it's doing some good, either for us or for others. This could be a walk in the mountains, the commencement of learning something new, the aroma of toast in the morning, or an object that uplifts our spirits merely by touching it.
Since the founding of ÁBBATTE, one of my most treasured gifts has been the botanical garden of dye plants, adjacent to the Santa María de la Sierra Monastery. Positioned just beneath the workshop, plants such as true indigo, madder, and tansy exhibit their beauty, delighting us anew this year.

The purpose of this unique garden isn't to dye ÁBBATTE products, as we would require many more hectares for that. Instead, its primary and significant purpose is to convey the unique value of these plants. It also enables us to conduct research, cultivate new species, observe their behaviour in the Segovian climate, explore their dyeing potentials, and then pass on this knowledge. After all, it's impossible to value something you don't fully understand.
The ABBATTE dye plant garden imparts this mission and countless life lessons to me. It serves as a reminder of the importance of not taking anything for granted. For instance, when I planted a tea tree, I was convinced I had found the perfect spot for it, but it never took root. Similarly, the sumac also bore the brunt of a late spring frost. Despite the garden posing constant challenges, it never ceases to amaze me. Recently, the spindle, Camila's favourite plant, has blossomed, showcasing all its unique traits.
The garden requires me to engage with it with an open mind, devoid of preconceived notions. It compels me to observe closely and listen attentively. I failed to listen when I stubbornly decided to plant the madder in an open, weed-free area. Unsurprisingly, none of them flourished. Much to my surprise, the madder grew robustly on the side, adjacent to the stone wall, and, surprisingly, was shielded from the highland temperatures by the weeds.

We have recently planted bog myrtle alongside the madder. Its leaves and flowers radiate beautiful shades of yellow and green. I don't know how they will do. However, I am confident that the outcome will be a delightful gift.

PS: I would like to extend my gratitude to Diego, the dedicated caretaker of the ÁBBATTE dye plant garden.
