On the occasion of the last Milan Design Week, ÁBBATTE presented ‘Translucency’, a textile sculpture in movement that pays homage to subtlety and the importance of knowing how to look.
ÁBBATTE's new artwork consists of three panels of pure silk in its natural colour, suspended from a metal structure that acts as a frame.
Placed in parallel, these panels create a play of transparencies, allowing light to pass through while concealing the image behind. Each silk panel has been woven with a few coloured lines in different shades of cauldron, forming stripes that, when seen together, create geometries and an effect of depth.
These panels are only attached at the top, which encourages movement in the air or when passing by. A kind of subtle dance that invites contemplation.
“We wanted to somehow return to our origins through our most emblematic fiber: virgin silk, which retains the protein that covers the fiber when it emerges from the cocoon. This gives a consistency and a very special powdery matt finish that just a few identify with silk,” explains Camila Lanzas, ÁBBATTE's Creative Director.
Although conceived as a work of art, at ÁBBATTE we go further and propose 'Translucency' as a solution for dividing spaces or as a window screen that gently filters images and light.
“At ÁBBATTE we celebrate life and beauty. It's important for us to highlight the daily routines that bring us closer to matter, and we can't think of a better way to do this than through everyday objects that speak of who we are,” adds Camila.
‘Translucency’ was woven entirely by hand on our looms in the Monastery of Santa María de la Sierra, Segovia. It can be made to order in different sizes and colours. Production time is approximately 8 weeks.
